Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the first in a series of games, retelling and expanding on the story of 1997’s Final Fantasy VII.
Announced in 2015 and released on August 10th 2020, FFVIIR takes place entirely in the city of Midgar. With following releases set to expand on characters and locations from the original game.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake follows Cloud, Aerith, Barret, Tifa and the Avalanche crew as they set out on their journey to stop the evil Shinra Corporation. Set in the megacity Midgar, the story takes you through tightly packed slums and sprawling sewers through to the glittering lights of Wall Market.
Differences from the original
The battle system in FFVIIR features a combination of real-time and classic ATB. Tapping Square to perform an attack, or blocking with the R trigger fills the ATB meter.
Once your character’s meter is full, hit X to pause the action and select from items, magic or actions.
Tip: Players can switch between party members using the d-pad. Before you cast a spell or use a special move as your main character, switch through the others to fill their ATB. You’re more likely to stagger larger enemies with three powerful attacks at once.
Staggering enemies is a mechanic borrowed from Final Fantasy XII. Most larger enemies will absorb normal hits, while dishing out powerful attacks. The trick here is to use the Analyze materia to find the enemies weakness, then hit it with everything you’ve got. Once you’ve staggered them, use Cloud’s punisher technique and mid-level magic to quickly end the fight. Grenades and throwable items are useful against staggered enemies when paired with a special attack such as Cloud’s Braver.
As well as a fully realised Midgar to explore, FFVIIR adds new tons of sidequests and characters. Fans of the original will enjoy walking around listening to snippets of conversations as they happen around Cloud. Fans of the original will enjoy several surprises and story changes along the way, but we won’t spoil those.
